Wax Melts: 5 Ways To Increase Your Scent Throw

Updated: Nov 19, 2021

After months of testing and researching I have been able to come up with the best tips to get the best results out of your wax melts.

Tip #1 - Using the Correct Burner

Now this might seem an obvious one but most of your super stores actually stock oil burners and not wax warmers.

What is the difference you ask?

Well firstly, an oil burner will have only been tested to be used for aromatherapy oils, whereas a wax warmer will have been tested for the sole purpose of wax melts.

Oil burners are not suitable for wax melts as wax heats up at a higher temperature compared to the oils, thus making it not safe.

A true quality burner will not be cheap for me, the supplier, or even you as the customer. However, it will last longer, and be less likely to cause any damage or issues. It will also give you better usage for your wax melts, and will be CE approved.

Cheaper burners are more likely to not have been tested for the use of wax melts, or anything at all.

Tip #2 - Tea Lights

This may sound like a silly one however ensuring your using the correct size tealight is a must!

You don't want to be using a tealight which is larger or burns any longer then 3 hours. You should also only put one tealight under at a time, never stack them. This is because it will overheat the burner, causing your wax melt to burn the scent off quicker - potentially burning your wax melt. There is also a risk of your burner overheating and causing a hairline fracture, this could lead to potential dangers such as fires, or your burner shattering.

Tip #3 - Location, Location, Location!

Quite often I see a huge common mistake happen and that is burners on window sill.

Placing your burner by the window will affect the temperature of your burner as there will be draughts, thus reducing the heat and not releasing a good scent throw.

Ideally, you want your burner to be placed on a stable surface away from any draughts or flammable objects.

Leaving your burner (whether it is lit or not) on top of a fireplace will cause your wax melts to get hot and sweat - reducing the fragrance.

Tip #4 - Keeping It Clean

Keeping your burner clean is very important! Just putting another wax melt on top of another is not going to get you the best scent throw.

You can clean your burner 2 ways:

  1. Place a tealight underneath your burner, or if you own an electrical burner, switch it on, and let it warm up for approximately 30 seconds or so. Gently push the old existing wax out. If it's still stuck give it another 30 seconds until it slides out smoothly.

  2. Let your burner melt the wax fully until a liquid and place 2-3 cotton pads on top of the wax to soak it up, then discard and place another fresh wax melt in your burner.

Tip #5 - Burning Your Melts When Needed

Only burn your wax melts when needed, for instance there would be no point lighting your burner when your cooking strong scents in the kitchen. The other scents would overthrow the fragrance of the wax.

Warm it don't burn it

Ensure you have got the correct wax melt warmer to get the most out of your wax.
